A Prayer of Thanks

from 2 Kings 2:1–2, 6–14

As the Lord lives, I will not leave you.
And so we give thanks for friends and students,
apprentices, daughters and sons,
congregations, grandchildren,
trainees, mentees and employees –
for their loyalty, their respect,
their care and their service,
their willingness to learn and all
we have learned from them.

Tell me what I may do for you.
And so we give thanks
for friends and teachers,
instructors, parents and siblings,
ministers, elders, grandparents,
trainers, mentors, employers –
for their generosity, their respect,
their care and their service,
their willingness to guide us
and to learn alongside us.

Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?
And so we give thanks
for our faithful God,
known through the people
with whom we travel,
seen in the Way of Life we follow,
heard in the silent receiving
of our prayers.

We give thanks for the story
of God and God's prophets,
for the faithful telling of the story
throughout the ages;
may we faithfully live this story
of humility and courage,
keeping it alive for those who will take
the mantle, when we must let it go.

Amen.

  1. I'm preparing for next week and have been reviewing the story of Elijah and Elisha. This is well suited for worship. Thank you.
