boats and storms

Matt 14:22–33

Life is like a boat on an ocean,
held by slippery mystery,
presented with boundless wonder,
vulnerable to whims and powers,
alone and never alone.

We pray for our lives,
boats sailing a vast ocean
of beauty, and of danger.

Waves batter our boats,
shake us about and bruise us.

Pause
We look for you,
who walks across the waves towards us.

Winds hammer our boats,
toss us and turn us in all the wrong directions.

Pause

We look for you,
who walks across the waves towards us.

Land disappears behind us;
feeling helpless and lost, we stop, drift …

Pause

We look for you,
who walks across the waves towards us.

Your voice calls us beyond our boats,
into the unknown: we trust, then falter.

Pause

We look for you,
who walks across the waves towards us.

We begin to sink, give in to fear,
cry for your help almost later than never.

Pause

We look for you,
who walks across the waves towards us.

Life is like a boat on an ocean,
held in the boundless mystery,
the vulnerability of being alone and never alone.

Jesus walks towards us on the sea,
and says 'Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid.'

[suggest following with (Iona Community) song ‘Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger, my love is stronger than your fear.’]
