it is good for us to be here

Luke 9:28–36

Oh, Holy One,
may our communion with you
change us so others see
us shining with your light

Oh Holy One,
may your presence with us
envelop us close as a cloud
so we drip with your holiness

Oh, Holy One,
may we listen to Jesus,
your son, your chosen,
and become more like him

Amen.

to be merciful, like God

Luke 6:27–38

We pray for those who oppose us,
who hurl hate our way,
who curse our name,
who hurt, who attack, who abuse.

We pray for the inner turmoil
that lies behind such harm,
self-loathing turned on others,
insecurities turned to venom,
pain, sorrow, abuse suffered themselves.

We pray for those who cause harm,
for all in pain, not knowing how
to heal or to forgive.

May we, your people,
be agents of love that heals,
living your grace that restores.

We pray for those who act
with violence towards others,
with disrespect for property and person,
with greed, entitlement, selfish disdain.

We pray for victims of violence
who learn no other way,
for poverty's angry outcomes,
wealth's insatiable appetite for more.

We pray for those who cause harm,
for all in pain, not knowing how
to heal or to forgive.

May we, your people,
be agents of love that heals,
living your grace that restores.

We pray for those who pass judgement,
and for our own tendencies
toward self-congratulation.

We pray from and for the messiness
of life lived alongside others
different and sometimes oh, too, similar
to ourselves.

We pray for those who cause harm,
for all in pain, not knowing how
to heal or to forgive.

May we, your people,
be agents of love that heals,
living your grace that restores.

Hear our prayers, Holy One;
may we live love for each other
that will transform enemies
into friends.
Amen.

a multitude of the heavenly host

Christmas Praise with Luke 2:8–20

angels fill our sky with gold:
our eyes blink with wonder!

angels fill the air with music:
our hearts sing a song long awaited!

angels fill the sky with light:
our souls dance, amazed!

angels fill the air with life:
our lungs expand and – sigh!

Praise to You, our Holy One,
Source of Life and Love,

born again in the wondrous story,
born again in us tonight / today!

No place for them

Christmas Intercessions with Luke 2:1–7

We remember Joseph and Mary,
displaced

and we pray for our neighbours,
displaced

silence

We remember Joseph and Mary,
uprooted

and we pray for our neighbours,
uprooted

silence

We remember Joseph and Mary,
expectant

and we pray for our neighbours,
expectant

silence

We remember Jesus,
born

and we pray for our neighbours,
and ourselves

silence

Amen

Praying with Simeon

Luke 2:22–40

As Simeon waited to see the child,
the promise, the hope, the light;

so we remember those who wait
for promise, for hope, for light,
through long years and many trials.

We remember: God, remember with us.

As Simeon trusted God and listened,
faithful, attentive, patient,

so we remember those who listen for you
with faithfulness, attention, patience, trust,
through long years and many trials.

We remember: God, remember with us.

As Simeon recognised the Holy Child,
sang praise and thanks and peace,

so we remember those who praise you
with gratitude and peace, in their words and living,
through long years and many trials.

We remember: God, remember with us.

As Simeon saw in the Holy Child
challenges and a cost to pay,

so we remember those who embrace
the challenge and cost of Jesus' way
through long years and many trials.

We remember: God, remember with us.

And God, we, like Simeon,
wait, listen, hope, praise,
and try to understand;
remember us, also: God, remember us.
Amen.

Lament and thanksgiving for broken bread

Luke 24:13–35 and Acts 2:36–42
in a time of suspended gatherings

we cannot ‘break bread’ with others, now,
beyond those in our homes. For many of us,
we cannot ‘break bread’ except alone.
We lament, for there is much we miss
with the seats at our tables empty;
there is much we miss, unable to receive
from others, hospitality.
we lament, feeling the sorrow,
the loss, the emptiness of ‘breaking
bread’ away from the community.

pause

and yet, somehow the empty
tables, empty chairs remind
us of the people who have sat
here, have laughed with us,
have cried, debated, wondered,
with us; for the stories we
shared here, for the food
that nourishes us still,
and the company that will
again; we give thanks
for the phones and tablets,
the satellites and wires that bring
our loved ones to our tables,
though it is not the same,
for now, it is enough, reminds
us to hope for bodies to fill
these chairs again, for tables
to visit again, for company embodied
once more in the ‘breaking bread’
and sharing.

pause

in our sorrow, in our making
do, in our thanks for what has been
and hope for what will be
again, we see you,
Holy Friend, we feel
you, present in our lonely
days, never leaving us
alone: you are with us,
and we will sit with you,
broken bread of life. Amen.

Gabriel and Maria

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
surprising her by calling out her name:
‘Fear not,’ he said, ‘for God has seen and favours you,
You’re chosen for a blessing, Maria.

‘You will become a mother, Mary,
by Holy Spirit, with a child holy;
he is the one earth’s waiting for – the child of God,
O chosen for a blessing, Maria.’

‘But Gabriel how can this be, my friend?’
‘With God no thing’s impossible,’ he said.
‘Then let it be as you have said, I sing God’s praise.’
O, chosen for a blessing: Maria.

And so in Bethlehem she bore her boy
beneath a star as angels sang for joy:
Immanuel, our God with us, through Mary.
O chosen for a blessing, Maria.

Found

a call to worship
Luke 19:1–10

may we come to worship as Zaccheus did:
climbing trees, scraping knees,
using all our strength and effort,
just to see –

may we come to worship as Zaccheus did:
seen, invited, knowing ourselves welcome
in the embrace of the Son of Humanity

may we come to worship as Zaccheus did:
changed by your love, inspired
by your love, reconciled and reconciling
with all

Persistent Intercession

Luke 18:1–8

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.

We cry out in marches,
strikes, and rallies,
led by the young
who see the urgent need
for just living with creation
more clearly than those
already through their schooling.

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.

We cry out from bank accounts,
our abundance flowing
over toward our neighbours
deep in need – farmers
on parched land, students without books
or shoes, mothers without medicine
for their children.

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.

We cry out from hospitals
and nursing homes, where
illness ravages and care
is stretched beyond capacity;
we sit beside the suffering
and isolated and grieving ones
who yearn for comfort, love, and hope.

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.

We cry out with our votes
and letters and signatures on petitions,
calling leaders to act for the vulnerable:
for refugees, for the homes from which
they flee, for peace. We cry, we cry
for peace.

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.

We cry out in solidarity
with the indigenous people of this land,
more, we still our own voices and hear
their crying for themselves, give space
and time and honour where too long
they have been taken.

Leader: We cry for justice, Judge of all creation.
All: And we will cry till we are satisfied.
Amen.

Where were we?

Luke 17:11–19

Confession
Leader: Was no one found to praise Holy One?
All: One was found, praising, giving thanks.
Leader: Who was the one found praising Holy One?
All: The one outsider, not one of us.
Leader: Where were we, the ones who belong?
All: Our people took, and turned, and walked away.

Leader: Oh Holy One, our people turned away;
Oh Holy One, and so do we.
We take all you will give
and walk away, no thanks,
no second glance in gratitude.
And you?
You give again, and give again,
second chances from your
broken heart.

Oh, we are sorry, Holy One.
At last we remember and turn
back to you, broken hearts
and promises needing your healing touch.
Help us remember, help us to stay
longer, help us refrain from taking
you for granted.

Assurance of grace
Hear Holy One’s invitation,
Holy One’s reconciliation,
enter Grace, know healing,
and stay.
Amen.

we want more

Luke 17:5–10

increase our faith
we cry
ungrateful for the seed
already planted,
neglecting its thirst,
inattentive to its growth –
it is small, give us
larger, give us more,
we cry,
ungrateful for the gift
already given,
inattentive to its worth,
neglecting the giver –
it is small, we must
work hard,
can we not have an easy
path, that lighter yoke
you mentioned?
bless us more richly,
show us to be so
faithful by the increase
of your anointing.

unconvinced

Luke 16:31

the voice of Moses
echoes wall to desert wall
resurrection? no.

the search for home

Part 1.
Luke 15:1–10

I am the lost sheep,
distracted, tempted
by what seemed greener.

Jesus, search for me,
and bring me home.

I am the lost coin,
discarded, neglected
as little, too little.

Jesus, search for me
and help me shine.

I am the grumbler,
disturbed, incensed
at your welcome of – 'them'.

Jesus, search for me,
show me your way.

Amen

Part 2.
Luke 15:11–32

I am the lost son,
discontented, impatient
to be my own person.

Jesus, search for me,
return me to Home.

I am the lost son,
disheartened though granted
all I need and more.

Jesus, search for me,
bring my love Home.

I am the lost parent,
dejected, incomplete,
a child turned from me.

Jesus, search with me,
bring my children Home.

Amen

to become your disciples

Luke 14:25–33

Acknowledging our brokenness
Holy One, we pray,
where our tribal trees
twist and bind us,
let us stretch out, break free;
where branches constrict,
suffocate, give us air
again to breathe.

Where we lie buried,
rest possessed,
dig us out;
turn us around towards
enough.

Where we have stuck
ourselves, stuffed our
own self, blow it all
down, build us again,
anew, your people,
for you.

Amen

Assurance of grace

We come to worship woven into relationships:
relationships that heal and nurture,
relationships experiencing brokenness and pain.
God welcomes each of us as we are,
offers joy and hope,
comfort and healing,
grace as we return to God’s Way of Love.
Amen.

Sent and called: an invitation to the Table

Introduction to Holy Communion
with Luke 10:1-20

Jesus sends us into the world,
to gather, bring peace, be fed.

Jesus calls us in from the world,
to gather, rest in his peace, be fed.

Jesus sends us into the world
with a Spirit of healing, a gift of comfort.

Jesus calls us in from the world
for our healing, to rest in his comfort.

Jesus sends us into the world
to speak an invitation of return to God.

Jesus calls us in from the world:
invited, welcomed, to rest in the heart of God.

And so we ask:        Holy One, have mercy on us.
Jesus, the Christ, have mercy on us.
Holy One, Holy Three, give us peace.

Ascension blessings

Luke 24:44–53

Gathering
We gather in awe and wonder,
hoping to enter your presence again;
we gather to wait on your Spirit,
seeking your blessing, offering our praise.

Sending
Continue now in the presence of God,
offering praise with joy and gratitude.

May you always know the blessing of Christ,
be ever clothed with the power of the Spirit,
and showered in the promise of our Creator.
Amen.

Easter prayers from and for the world

Luke 24:36–49

Stand among us,
risen Christ Jesus:
bring peace to us again.

When miracles happen
and we struggle to accept,
show us your presence again.

When death casts its shadow,
frightens and terrifies,
show us life enduring anew.

Stand among us,
risen Christ Jesus:
bring joy to us again.

When story and scripture
get tangled in our confusion,
show us your Way again.

When the Divine seems far away,
and waiting seems far too hard,
whisper your promise again.

Stand among us,
risen Christ Jesus:
bring hope to us again.

The words in bold could be spoken by the congregation.

It is true

Luke 24:1–12

confession

we don't believe it
it is true!

we don't believe you
it is true!

we won't listen
it is true!

we trust our own eyes only
it is true!

and in the truth
of our humanity
flawed and fragile,
beautiful and bombastic,
you came, you come,
you lived, you died,
you live again

bring us into your truth
of our humanity,
of your Sacred wonder –
draw us into new life!

grace

Here we are
on Easter Day,
the day of resurrection:
believe it,
it is true,
grace, love, life,
are here for you,
for us all.
Be at peace.
Amen.

the refrain of 'it is true' could be spoken by a woman, a group of women, or all the women in the congregation, to draw attention to the story from which this prayer takes its inspiration: the male disciples not believing the female witnesses to the resurrection.
speaking the refrain as a whole congregation draws us into our own disbelief.
be creative as you pray this prayer in a meaningful way for your community.

Run Home

Luke 24: 1–12

amazed
stunned
knocked off our balance
what is this
who is this
how have we
been
so close
to wonder
tilted ever slightly
every moment
off
balance
onto
a new even
more even
imagination, vision
catch up now
wonder
how close
we are
touch it
taste it
this new even
run
run
home
