when will the world be generous?

a prayer for the world based on a hymn by J. Bell and G. Maule.
considering Mark 3:31–35 and the kin-dom of God.

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

Bank managers, boards, executives,
look their wallets through
honeycomb mazes to lose
us, help us lose what is ours:

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

Islands slide beneath the water,
one wave at a time from the rest
who turn their faces from the sun:

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

Evacuated, rescued, encamped on borrowed
land; deserted, forgotten, ignored,
rejected – our neighbours suffer
disempowerment and we do not reclaim
our power, for their sake or our own:

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

Leaders leave behind their people
and principles, unheeded; dollars take
precedence over sense as guides; polls
make politicians decide, not policy
considered and measured:

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

Neighbours close their windows
to each other, tables gather dust,
communities lack trust enough
to welcome, share, be company
for each other:

When will the world be generous
to all instead of some?

God, we yearn with you for a world
more generous, extending love, freedom,
justice, peace on earth as it is
in your eternal realm.
Amen.
